We are really proud to have been part of the Portland State University Graphic Design Program’s annual “Be Honest” portfolio review.

This year we were happy to sponsor our first-ever scholarship for a deserving Sophomore who showed incredible promise, professionalism, and who best represented what we feel is the spirit behind the Land Gallery. Our scholarship went to Savannah Julian, who’s brochure for a fake airline “Roger” won us over.

We were also thrilled to finally meet The Little Friends of Printmaking in person. We’ve always been big fans of their work, and JW and Melissa are impossibly polite and charming in person.

It was a really great evening down at Instrument, and we were really impressed with the amount of great work being produced by folks in Portland. We feel really lucky to be surrounded by so many talented folks.

We’re really excited to have Sam McPheeters doing spoken word with us THIS SATURDAY, May 5th at 5pm.

He’s touring to support his amazing new novel on Mugger Books, The Loom Of Ruin .

Instead of just reading from the book, he’ll be doing a spoken-word routine.

Sam says about what he’ll be doing: “I’ll be doing spoken word — stories, jokes, cracking wise).”

We’re excited for our friend David Lester, part of the wonderful Mecca Normal, who once played a free show in the Gallery.

His graphic novel, The Listener, has been nominated for ForeWord Reviews’ “2011 Book Of The Year Award” in the graphic novel category. ForeWord Reviews is a U.S.-based magazine primarily for librarians and booksellers and focuses on small and independent publishers.

The Listener contrasts the true story of the 1933 election that brought Hitler to power with the fictional death of a political activist.

The book chronicles a year of collecting and photographing the treasures from a second graders pockets and includes comment from a growing up Bella.

Come view the objects and images, pick up a copy of the book, and have it signed after the reading.

It is multi-medium show featuring over 30 artists interpretations of what tickled their fancy in the Legend of Zelda catalog.

The line-up is a crazy list of amazing designers and artists, over half of which will be in attendance opening night.

Our good friend Tae Won Yu has done a series of amazing 3D papercuts for some album covers recently. We’ve been blown away by his use of color and the construction of these mini-worlds.

Tae designed the “Land” logo for us and illustrated the “Land Bear” character you see on our signs and advertisements.

Just got this wonderful book in the shop!

(yes, we posted this as a subtle homage to Portlandia’s Put a Bird on it, which was filmed int he shop).
